Women's Soccer: Marauders Fall 4-1 to Gee-Gees, Will Play for National Bronze on Sunday

Revenge was not on the cards as McMaster suffered a second loss to Ottawa

After the euphoria of Thursday night, Saturday afternoon provided a harsh lesson for the Marauders, as they came out on the losing end of their U SPORTS semifinal against the host Ottawa Gee-Gees.

McMaster drew within a goal in the 68th minute, but conceded twice late to crash out of title contention with a 4-1 loss. It was the Marauders second defeat to the Gee-Gees in just over a week, having lost in a penalty shootout at the OUA semifinal stage eight days earlier.

A highlight-reel worthy goal from forward Lindsay Bosveld gave Marauders fans hope of a late comeback when the visitors pegged the Gee-Gees back to 2-1 with 22 minutes to play. But the dream was short-lived, as Ottawa struck in the 76th and 82nd minutes to put the game well beyond reach.

With the result, the Marauders will battle the Cape Breton Capers for national bronze Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

A quick double midway through the first half put the hosts in the driver's seat, as the Gee-Gees opened the scoring in the 19th minute through a pinballing own goal before Emma Lefebvre lashed home six minutes later to put Ottawa two goals to the good.

Bosveld produced a moment of brilliance in the 68th minute, after coming into the match as a second half substitute, to pull the Marauders within a goal in fine style.

Pulling in a pass from winger Aly Riganelli, Bosveld took one touch to settle the bounce before turning and smashing a ferocious volleyball off the inside of the far post and past the diving Gee-Gees goalkeeper.

Hope didn't last long for the travelling fans, however, as Lefebvre was clinical once again in front of goal, pulling in a pass from Mikayla Morton and firing low past Juliana Hifawi for 3-1 in the 76th.

Morton added her own name to the scoresheet eight minutes from time, as the hosts put an exclamation point on their win, advancing to meet the Trinity Western Spartans in the national final.
