Women's Basketball: Hanaka Leads Marauders in Opening Night Rout of Warriors

McMaster held Waterloo to just 20 per cent shooting Wednesday

Expectations are high for the Marauders in 2018-19, and they delivered a strong statement on the season's opening night in support of those standards.

Buoyed by a 21-point night from veteran point guard Hilary Hanaka, McMaster blew out Waterloo 75-33 at Burridge Gym Wednesday.

Hanaka was an impeccable 8-11 from the floor and 4-5 from three-point range in the win, while fellow fifth-year starter Linnaea Harper racked up a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

McMaster shot 33 per cent from the field and 22 per cent from three as a group, while holding Waterloo to just 20 per cent shooting in the lopsided result.

There were no lead changes Wednesday, as the Warriors never led after conceding the game's opening field goal on a three from Hanaka in the first quarter.

The Marauders held a considerable, eight-point lead after the opening 10 minutes, but the floodgates truly opened in the second, where McMaster scored 23 points and allowed just six, paving the way for a 42-16 advantage at the halftime break.

It was largely academic from there, and the home side outscored their visitors in each of the remaining quarters to further pad out the win.

NEXT UP: McMaster remains at home at the Burridge Gym for a second consecutive game to begin the OUA season Saturday, as the Marauders welcome the Windsor Lancers for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff on October 27.
