Women's Basketball: Marauders Pull Away in the Third to Drop Lancers 74-66

Guard Hilary Hanaka posted her second consecutive 21-point game to lead McMaster Saturday

Enduring a red hot start from beyond the arc by their opponents Saturday, the Marauders asserted themselves in the third quarter to put the game beyond reach.

McMaster outscored Windsor by 10 in the third frame to build a 13-point lead, and held onto it en route to a 74-66 win over the Lancers at Burridge Gym.

With the result, the Marauders improved to 2-0 on the young OUA season, having swept their way through their season-opening week at home.

Posting an identical total of 21 points to the one she enjoyed on opening night Wednesday, guard Hilary Hanaka once again led her team on the scoreboard Saturday, hitting nine of 20 attempts from the field and two of six from three-point range.

Enjoying balanced scoring from their starters in the win, the Marauders saw Linnaea Harper (17), Christina Buttenham (16) and Olivia Wilson (12) all hit double digits Saturday, as the team shot 43 per cent as a group from the field.

Windsor flew out of the gates at Burridge Gym, taking a 23-17 lead after 10 minutes on the strength of a 64 per cent hit rate from three-point range. Carly Steer had four of those three pointers on five attempts herself, leading all scorers at the quarter's end with 12 points.

But the visitors naturally cooled from there, and the combination of a Hanaka layup and a Buttenham steal and layup in the final minute of the second quarter gave McMaster the three-point lead at the halftime break.

That proved to be the last lead change of the afternoon, as the Marauders padded their advantage with an 11-0 run early in the third quarter and never looked back from there.
