Men's Soccer: Marauders Explode for Three Goals in Final Five Minutes to Race Past Thunderbirds

McMaster broke a 2-2 deadlock in the 87th minute to snatch all three points in Sault Ste. Marie

A whirlwind first half gave the underdog Thunderbirds hope of a point Saturday, but the Marauders responded late to snatch all three of them away cruelly.

McMaster scored three goals in quick succession inside the final three minutes of play in Sault Ste. Marie to complete a 5-2 victory on the penultimate day of the OUA season.

The result ensured that the Marauders will host a first round conference playoff game on Wednesday, October 24, as they inched closer to clinching the third seed in the OUA's West Division by improving to 8-3-4 on the season.

Gracing a lineup made up largely of younger players, veterans Dusan Kovacevic and Yunus Mollayev did the damage for the Marauders, with the former accounting for three of Mac's goals while the latter added two.

The two got the visitors off to a flying start Saturday, with Kovacevic opening the scoring in the 20th minute and Mollayev striking in the 35th to give McMaster a comfortable 2-0 lead well before the halftime whistle.

That comfort quickly vanished however, and the lead with it, as the Thunderbirds scored twice within a span of three minutes to restore level pegging, and force the game into a stalemate at the break.

It seemed that the match was destined for a draw, before the Marauders managed to open the floodgates in the 87th minute, with Kovacevic grabbing his second goal of the afternoon. He was the man on the scene once again just a minute later to complete the hat trick, and Mollayev added insult to injury by nabbing his second mere moments before the final whistle.

NEXT UP: McMaster concludes the regular season with a rematch against the Thunderbirds Sunday at 3:15 p.m.
