FOOTBALL: MARAUDERS FACE 8TH-RANKED OTTAWA IN KEY MATCH-UP

For the second straight week, the McMaster football team will clash with a ranked opponent as the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees make the trip to Hamilton for an important early season game.  The Marauders enter the contest ranked no. 9 in the U SPORTS Top-Ten.

With Ottawa undefeated after three games and the Marauders now at 1-1 in OUA play, this game could have big implications on the final league standings and playoff positions.

Tickets are available for purchase at Marauders.ca or at the ticket office in the David Braley Athletic Centre.  McMaster Student tickets can also be purchased at the Compass Information Desk in the McMaster Student Centre.

OTTAWA GAME NOTES

  • LAST WEEK:  The Marauders hosted Western last Saturday and dropped a 29-14 decision to the powerful Mustangs, leaving the Mac record at 1-1.   Ottawa improved to 3-0 in the OUA, with a 4th-quarter comeback that saw the Gee-Gees beat York 26-17
  • LAST MATCH-UP: The Marauders and  the Gee-Gees last played in Week-3 of the 2016 season in the nation's capital.   The hometown Gee-Gees handed McMaster  its first loss of last season by a score of  30-8 on September 10, 2016.
  • HISTORY: Since the formation of the OUA in 1971, McMaster  leads the head-to-head series with Ottawa, registering 10 wins versus 6 losses.  McMaster and Ottawa have met six times in the post-season with McMaster winning four games and Ottawa winning two.
  • TOP-TEN:  The loss  to Western  saw the Marauders drop  to the No. 9 spot in the weekly U SPORTS  top-ten.  At 3-0 Ottawa moves one spot ahead of the Marauders into the No. 8 position in the rankings.  Four OUA teams made the top-ten, including  Western (#4), and  Laurier (#5).
  • RECORD SET: Receiver Dan Petermann  (Hamilton, ON) has moved onto the top of the career receptions list for McMaster football.  His six catches vs. Western gives him 153 for his career, passing the previous record-holder Ryan Janzen, who ended his Hall of Fame career with 150.
  • PASSER PICK: A big question for Marauder coach Greg Knox will be who starts at quarterback for the Marauders.   Freshmen Andreas Dueck (Winnipeg, MB) and Jackson White (Cambridge, ON) have taken nearly all the snaps over the first two OUA contests with Dueck getting the start in both games.   White came on in relief against Western at halftime, and provided a spark to the offense by passing for 103 yards and running for 97 yards and a 33-yard touchdown burst.
  • PICKING OFF PASSERS:  McMaster's All-Canadian corner Robbie Yochim (Kelowna, BC) is off to a great start to the season with interceptions in each of the team's first three  games, including the pre-season contest with Saskatchewan.
  • HALL OF FAME:  McMaster Athletics & Recreation has announced the 2017 inductees to the McMaster Athletic Hall of Fame, and a Marauder gridiron great of the past is among those being enshrined.  Defensive back Kwame Aidoo had a terrific five-year career in Maroon and, among many highlights, helped McMaster win four consecutive Yates Cup titles between 2000 and 2003.  The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner is being held on Friday, September 29th in the Quigley Sport Hall.
