Women's Volleyball: Mac Sweeps Ryerson to Advance to OUA Final, U SPORTS Championship

The Marauders will contest the conference final for the first time since winning in 2014.

Box Score The best in the West will battle it out tomorrow for one and two in the OUA Women's Volleyball Championship.

McMaster completed a three-set sweep of the Ryerson Rams in their Final Four matchup held at the University of Toronto to advance to the OUA final for the first time since winning it in 2014.

With the win, the Marauders clinched a spot in the U SPORTS Championship tournament, to be held at Ryerson's Mattamy Athletic Centre between March 17 and 19.

McMaster will now meet the Western Mustangs in Saturday's OUA title match, after the Mustangs shocked the home crowd at the Goldring Centre, besting the host Blues 16-14 in the fifth set to deal them their first loss in two seasons.

With Ryerson's loss to McMaster taking the OUA bronze medalist out of contention for a U SPORTS Championship place, the Blues will be unable to defend their national title.

McMaster's pair of OUA First Team All-Stars backed up their most recent achievements with convincing performances in the win. Joanna Jedrzejewska led the charge for the Marauders with a team-leading 18 points, while teammate Maicee Sorensen added 15 of her own against the Rams.

Marauders libero Carly Heath had an impressive 40 digs to silence the Ryerson attack, being named as Mac's Player of the Match in the process, while teammate Caitlin Genovy assisted on 40 of McMaster's 52 points.

In the opening set, the Marauders were slow to get their footing against the Rams, who surged to an early lead in the opening set, reaching double digits while the Marauders were only able to muster four points. A timeout by McMaster quickly righted the ship, however, as the Marauders surged back to get within three at the technical timeout. McMaster ground out a 25-21 victory in the opening set from there.

In each of the second and third sets, the teams remained neck-and-neck until the technical timeout, when McMaster would prove the stronger down the stretch.

The trend bore out in both sets, as Mac keep their collective cool to seal the straight-sets win.

Toronto will face the Rams in the bronze medal match tomorrow at 6 p.m. while the Mustangs will meet up with the Marauders at 8 p.m. to find who will be crowned OUA Champions.
