MEN’S BASKETBALL: MARAUDERS FALL IN OVERTIME

Box Score It was a tough loss for the McMaster men's basketball team as it fell 91-87 to the Windsor Lancers in overtime on Wednesday night in the border city.  McMaster falls to 8 and 10 in OUA play, while Windsor improves to 10-9.  Both teams are fighting for home-court in the first-round of the playoffs.

The game started with the teams trading buckets, but Mac was able to pull away late by finishing the quarter on a 9-2 run, and taking a 21-13 lead at the end of the first.

The Marauders were strong offensively in the second, but the Lancers were able to keep the game close, and going into halftime, McMaster held onto to a slim 42-39 lead.

McMaster surrendered the lead for the first time early in third quarter, as a three-pointer by Mike Rocca, gave Windsor a two-point edge with just under seven minutes left in the quarter. The maroon answered with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, and went up 66-59 by the end of the third.

The fourth quarter saw the Marauders extend their lead to 11 with just under five minutes remaining, but an inability to protect the ball allowed the Lancers to go on a 16-2 run over the next four minutes to take a three-point lead with 30 seconds left in regulation.

Coming out of a Mac timeout, Connor Gilmore knocked down a clutch triple to tie the game up at 80-80 with 18 seconds remaining. The Marauders were then able to prevent a score by Windsor,  sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, Mac took an early lead, before the Lancers tied the game up at 87 with two minutes left on the clock.   Like late in regulation, Marauder turnovers gave Windsor opportunities and Rocca knocked down an extremely difficult turnaround jumper to give Windsor a two-point lead with 3.6 seconds remaining. A timeout gave McMaster a chance to take the last shot, but the inbound pass was picked off, forcing Mac to foul and sealing the win for Windsor.

Connor Gilmore had a double-double for the Marauders scoring 24 points and pulling down 15 boards. Rohan Boney scored 17 points, while Lazar Kojovic and David McCulloch scored 13 and 11 respectively. Chris Thompson provided a spark off the bench, scoring 17 points and coming away with two steals. The Marauders will look at shooting just 54% from the free-throw line as being key in the loss.

The Marauders will hope to get back on track for their game against the Western Mustangs on Saturday at 3-pm.

The game can be streamed online at OUA.tv and is on radio on CFMU 93.3FM.
