McMaster was well represented Saturday, as Rugby Ontario celebrated its annual award winners at an event in Mississauga to conclude the calendar year.
Â
In a sweep of the male athlete categories, current Marauder fly half Will Kelly was recognized as the Junior Provincial Player of the Year, while Mac alumnus Rob Brouwer took home the Senior Provincial Player of the Year honour.
Â
Emerging as a star and team leader in just his first season as a Marauder, Kelly was recognized as the OUA Rookie of the Year in November after taking regular kicking duties at McMaster and finishing second in the conference with a total of 83 points in the regular season.
Â
His contributions helped Mac advance to the OUA bronze medal game, where they topped the Western Mustangs 25-7 in London, ending a playoff drought against the Mustangs that dated back to 2010.
Â
The calendar year was a busy one for the young fly half, who won the McCormick Cup with his Brantford Harlequins club team, represented the U19 Ontario Blues for a second year, graduated from the Canadian U18 to U20 setup, and appeared for the senior Ontario Blues alongside Mac teammate Mitch Richardson in an match against the Irish club Cork Constitution in August.
Â
Kelly's already decorated rugby career is set to reach new heights in January, as the Marauder will be centralizing with the Rugby Canada Centre of Excellence in Langford, BC.
Â
Occupying the prop position for Canada at the moment, Brouwer played lock for McMaster in a career that ran from 2001 to 2005 and included OUA Championship titles in 2002 and 2005.
Â
A current star for the Lindsay Rugby Football Club, and member of the Ontario Blues provincial team that won the MacTier Cup (Rugby Canada Super League) in 2016, Brouwer has made five appearances for the Canadian Senior Men's National 15s Team in 2016, debuting at the Americas Rugby Championship in February, where he came on as a substitute and helped Canada to a 52-25 win over Brazil.
Â
Most recently, Brouwer earned his first start for the Canadian 'A' team in a test against Samoa in Grenoble, France on November 25.

Another McMaster rookie, hooker Jack McRogers was chosen earlier this month to represent Canada at the U19 level, as the Canadians travel to California for a two-game series against the United States over the holidays.
Â
The team, chosen from across five regional training camps held in Kingston, Red Deer, Burnaby, Shawnigan and Guelph, will take on the US on December 30 and January 2 at the US Olympic Centre in Chula Vista, California.
