Box Score Steady and focused on their process, the Marauders grabbed a possibly season-altering result in the nick of time Sunday.
Maila Carboni headed home in the 89th minute to seal three important points, as McMaster edged Windsor 1-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium.
It was the third win of the past four matches for a McMaster (3-6-2) team that was miles off the playoff pace just two weeks ago. Now, following a coinciding Badgers loss to the Mustangs, the Marauders find themselves just two points back of the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA West division.
Windsor (6-1-4), meanwhile, suffered their first loss of 2016 but still retain full control of third spot in the division on the strength of 22 points.
McMaster's star transfer between the pipes continued to impress on Sunday, as
Deanna Persico stopped all 10 shots she faced to grab her third clean sheet in the past four matches.
Wasteful in the early stages, the Marauders saw several chances to take control of the match go begging early, and the teams entered the halftime break without a goal.
Another quality chance passed Mac by just two minutes into the second half, as Carboni rounded her marker but couldn't find the angle with her shot, firing straight at Windsor keeper Krystin Lawrence.
The match looked destined to go goalless as the teams marched toward the end of regulation, but the hosts had one final, beautifully-constructed move in store.
Alexandra Riganelli stepped up well to snuff out a Lancer pass and ran onto the loose ball, carrying wide to the right before launching a high cross into the box, where Carboni met it strongly with her head and guided the ball into the top corner at the near post.
With just a few minutes left to defend, the Marauders settled well to see out the deserved win.
UP NEXT: Mac faces a quick turnaround, as the Waterloo Warriors visit Ron Joyce Stadium on Wednesday, October 5 for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
