The tournament's two RSEQ rivals met in the championship game, while the host Marauders dropped a close, three-set decision (25-23, 26-24, 25-17) to the Brandon Bobcats in the consolation match at the Innisbrook Invitational in Clearwater, Florida Sunday.
Playing their way into the final match of the day, the Bobcats defeated the Brock Badgers 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-13) in the afternoon's first contest.
There was little to choose between the Bobcats and Marauders, as Brandon took a 16-15 lead into the first set technical timeout. Side-out volleyball reigned as the teams approached the finish line, before middle Jodie Baker killed to bring up set point at 24-23 and her Brandon teammates seized the opportunity in the next rally.
Momentum was firmly in Brandon's corner, and the Bobcats took a 7-3 lead early in the second set when Gillian Leech killed from the left side. The back-and-forth play continued, and Mac grabbed a two-point advantage at the technical timeout with the help of some tough serving. The Marauders seemed to be poised to level the match as they moved ahead 23-20, just two points from clinching, but that lead quickly evaporated. Another set point followed at 24-23, engineered by a kill from Ina Onat, but Brandon reeled off three consecutive points to take the 2-0 overall lead.
Once again, the Marauders took the early lead in set three, jumping ahead 6-2 after a tip from Rachel Woock. But Brandon immediately set to work closing the gap, and took a 16-15 lead into the technical timeout. Separating themselves late, the Bobcats surged ahead 20-17 and forced the Marauders to call their final timeout, winning the set and match by taking the next five points.
Sherbrooke and McGill met for the second consecutive day in the tournament's championship match, with the Vert et Or gaining revenge over the course of five hard-fought sets (28-26, 25-14, 21-25, 25-27, 15-13).
The first salvo in Sunday's extended final was fired by the Martlets, who took a 12-7 in the opening set and forced the Vert et Or to burn both of their team timeouts early. But Sherbrooke battled back slowly, and moved into a 21-18 lead on. Fighting tooth and nail, the teams moved into bonus points, and Sherbrooke found the edge to win a joust for 28-26.
Pressing their advantage in the second, the Vert et Or led early and often in a dominant showing. Their lead grew to four points at 11-7, and sat at seven by the onset of the technical timeout. That trend held as the set aged, and a stuff block from Sarah-Jeanne Meunier-Bedard sealed the frame and the commanding, two-set lead at 25-14.
The Martlets faced early adversity in the third, trailing 6-1 and calling an early team timeout, before reeling off a 9-2 run to snatch away the lead. They nurtured that advantage into the technical timeout, where it grew to four points, but were overcome by a late-set run by the Vert et Or. Swinging momentum yet again to tie the set at 21, McGill fired off the next four points to get on the overall score board.
The see-saw battle continued in the fourth, with both teams enjoying leads in the early going, before Sherbrooke took the teams into the technical timeout with a slender, one-point advantage. There was nothing to choose between the two as they moved into bonus points, but Sherbrooke blinked first as McGill levelled the match with a 27-25 set win.
Riding the momentum of that victory, the Martlets grabbed the first four points of the fifth set, but Sherbrooke immediately struck back and finally took a lead at 10-9. The Martlets remained in touch, but ultimately saw their opponents complete the comeback 15-13 and 3-2.
