Box Score Avenging their only loss of the conference season, the Marauders wrapped up a stellar weekend at the Burridge Gym with a four-set triumph over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday. Set scores were 25-11, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-21 for the CIS no. 6-ranked Marauders, who improved to an OUA West-leading 11-1 with the result.
Joanna Jedrzejewska continued to be McMaster's workhorse on the outside Sunday, putting 17 kills to the ground on 44 attempts versus five errors (.273) while adding two aces and a block for a game-high 20 points. Middle Taylor Brisebois shined yet again, posting 15.5 points including 11 kills on 20 attempts versus just two errors (.450), two aces and two and a half blocks. Veteran outside Lauren Mastroluisi also reached double digits in points with 12, while Jedrzejewska and libero Khira Adams were the defensive leaders with 15 and 16 digs respectively in the win.
A 5-0 run right out of the gate in the opening set forced Guelph to call an early timeout, and that momentum only continued to build for McMaster as the set wore on. The visitors were struggling mightily with the Marauders serving, and a pair of mis-hits from the Gryphons took the teams into the technical timeout with McMaster holding a commanding 16-5 lead. Little changed as the teams moved toward the finish line, and after a Mastroluisi tip brought up set points at 24-11, a solo block from rookie setter Michelle Chelladurai sealed it on the very next point.
Momentum stayed firmly in the Marauders end of court in the second set, and Guelph was sent back into the huddle trailing 13-8 after Brisebois rocketed a quick kill to the floor through the middle. Three more points saw the home side doubling up the visitors at the technical timeout, and things only worsened for the Gryphons when they were forced into their second team timeout trailing 19-10 after a Maicee Sorensen kill on the slide. A Guelph service error brought up set points at 24-14, and setter Caitlin Genovy ended the frame a point later by dumping to close out an extended rally.
Finding some life with their backs against the wall, Guelph took an early lead in the third set, and forced a timeout from McMaster when an attacking error from the Marauders pushed the Gryphons ahead 13-9. That lead held into the technical timeout, but looked in jeopardy at 18-16, when Guelph called time after watching a cut shot sail wide. They steadied after the break, and forced extra volleyball with the help of a contentious late call.
There was little to choose between the two teams early in the fourth set, and Mac led by just a single point at the technical timeout through a kill from Taylor Brisebois, who threaded the needle on a double block. Keeping themselves just out of reach, the Marauders forced the Gryphons to burn their last timeout when Jedrzejewska tipped successfully over the block for 20-16. Guelph was in desperate need of a run, but there was none to be found, as Mac closed out the match when a final Gryphon serve landed well wide.
