Women's Volleyball: Clinical Marauders Dismantle Gee-Gees

Box Score Playing perhaps their cleanest and most consistent volleyball of the season on Saturday night, the Marauders dominated the Ottawa Gee-Gees early and often en route to a convincing sweep at the Burridge Gym.

Set scores were 25-13, 25-10 and 25-19 in favour of the CIS no. 6-ranked Marauders, who improved to 10-1 on the season with the result. McMaster remains a game clear of the second-seeded team in the OUA West division, the Western Mustangs.

The usual suspect, outside Joanna Jedrzejewska, led all scorers with 12 points in the victory, killing 10 of 24 hitting attempts versus just a single error (.375) and adding two aces for good measure. Teammates Taylor Brisebois and Lauren Mastroluisi also cracked double digits in the point column, with 11.5 and 11 respectively.

After overcoming an early deficit in the opening set, the Marauders powered into the lead with the help of exceptional back-court defence from Carly Heath, who got a rare start in the libero spot. A one-handed dig extended the rally at 9-6, before the Marauders took the point and forced a timeout from the Gee-Gees. The break did little to turn the tide of momentum, as McMaster won six of the next nine points to lead 16-9 at the technical timeout after a missed connection from Ottawa setter Kira Tome and middle Alix Durivage.

Burning their last team timeout just two points later, the Gee-Gees were reeling when Durivage struck into a block, and gave away the first set limply when Tome was called on the net on set point.

The one-way traffic only worsened in the second set, where Ottawa was closest to McMaster when Caroline Lemay killed to cut the hosts' lead to 8-6. A 4-0 run ensued for the Marauders, with Jedrzejewska uncorking a massive ace that kissed the far sideline and forced a timeout from the Gee-Gees. Doubling up Ottawa at the technical timeout, McMaster kept their feet firmly on the gas pedal, leading by 11 points at 20-9 when Brisebois dusted off an overpass with ferocity. Five points later, a Jedrzejewska cut shot brought up set point, before a loose pass from Tome was touched to the floor to end the lopsided frame.

Early signs were more positive for the visitors to open the third, as they led by as many as six points before Tim Louks called time with the Marauders trailing 9-3. His enforced break, as well as the double substitution of Michelle Chelladurai and Mira Krunic into the game, radically turned the tide. McMaster embarked on a massive 13-3 run to bust into the technical timeout with a 16-12 lead after Mastroluisi wiped long.

Climbing within two points at 18-16, the Gee-Gees would get no closer on Saturday, and after Jedrzejewska killed with a touch shot deep to the near corner to bring up match points, Brisebois wiped to the middle of the floor to end the night.
