Box Score The Marauders and Badgers entered Friday's match on two very different trajectories, and, a second-set meltdown aside, they left the Burridge Gym on those same paths. The 9-1 Marauders defeated the 1-10 Badgers in four sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 25-11) to extend their OUA winning streak to eight matches and retain their hold on the top spot in the OUA West division.
Taylor Brisebois and Joanna Jedrzejewska posted identical totals of 14 points to lead the Marauders -- and the match -- with each hitting over a 30 per cent clip on the night. Brisebois notched 11 kills on 22 attempts versus just three errors (.364), while adding an ace and two blocks, while Jedrzejewska killed all 14 of her points on 33 attempts with four errors (.303). Middle Maicee Sorensen was similarly a standout, with 10.5 points including four aces in a strong serving performance.
Veteran outside Brianna Hamilton led the Badgers in a losing effort, posting 11 points -- all kills -- on 11 of 20 hitting versus four errors (.350).
Early signs were promising for McMaster on Friday, as the hosts took a 9-5 lead and forced a Brock timeout with Sorensen excelling at the service line. A Badger fightback forced a timeout from the Marauders with their lead down to two at 16-14, and coach Tim Louks made a substitution that would pay dividends repeatedly on Friday when he brought in Mira Krunic and rookie setter Michelle Chelladurai. Mac reeled off nine of the next 11 points to seal the set, winning it when Jedrzejewska wiped off the block and long for 25-16.
The second set appeared to be headed in the same direction, when the Marauders held a seemingly safe, late lead at 19-15. But Brock embarked on a stunning, 10-1 run to entirely overhaul that score, and levelled the match at a set apiece after a hitting error from Mac's Lauren Mastroluisi.
A tight start to the third set was blown apart when Sorensen connected on a massive kill through the middle to tie it at 8-8, after which she took to the service line. Mac won each of the next eight points to double their visitors up at the technical timeout, and ultimately went on a 17-1 run to bring up set point at 24-9 when Brisebois tooled a block wide. Three points later, Mac had regained the overall lead.
Their momentum carried the Marauders to a dominant early lead in the fourth set, from which they would never look back, reaching 8-2 with the help of a Mastroluisi service run. Leading by nine at the technical timeout, the Marauders would not be caught, and sealed the match with a Sorensen block for 25-11.
