Box Score Much like the teams' first meeting of the season on opening night, Friday's encounter between the Marauders and Warriors was lopsided from the very first rally. McMaster swept the season series with Waterloo, winning all six sets played with a straight-set victory on the road.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 for the Marauders, who improved to 3-1 on the season with the result.
The usual suspect, Joanna Jedrzejewska led McMaster and the match with 13.5 points on Friday, with 11 kills, two aces and a block assist to her name. Most efficient of any hitter on either side of the net, Taylor Brisebois killed eight of her 14 attempts (.357), while contributing two aces for a total of 10 points.
Neck and neck from the opening serve, the two teams separated when McMaster cleaned up its act, and Waterloo called time trailing 13-8 after a misfired attack. The Marauders built a commanding, eight-point lead at 18-10, but the Warriors began to eat into it, and Casey Clunas forced a Mac timeout when she drew her team within four points at 20-16.
McMaster regrouped after the break, and after Maicee Sorensen killed off the slide play to bring up set point, a limp Waterloo attack found the net to end the first in the Marauders favour.
Momentum was squarely in the visitors' corner as the team's opened the second set, and after Alicia Jack notched a solo block, Waterloo was forced into a timeout trailing 6-1. Piling on as the teams reached the technical timeout, the Marauders held a 10-point cushion at the break following a Brisebois ace.
Improved back court defence led the Warriors to another late surge in the second, but it was too little, too late, as Rebecca Steckle tipped to the floor to bring up set point before combining with Jill Eisenhauer for the fatal double stuff.
With their backs against the wall, the host Warriors emerged strongly in the third set, and had a 6-3 lead after an ace. A momentary fightback from McMaster evened up the set, but Waterloo retook the lead 16-12 at the technical on the strength of more backcourt defence.
Facing a late deficit, Mac went to work to claw it back, and had finally tied the set at 19 after a Jedrzejewska kill through the pipe. From there, the Marauders sped to the finish line, winning six of the next seven points to seal the match when Rachel Woock knocked down a pipe ball of her own.
