Box Score A dangerous team with several high-profile wins to their name already in 2015, the Windsor Lancers posed a definite challenge to McMaster on Saturday. But the Marauders hit efficiently and challenged the Lancers constantly from the service line, en route to a convincing straight set (25-19, 25-14, 25-13) win at the Burridge Gym.
The victory was McMaster's fifth straight, as the Marauders moved to 6-1 overall and solidified their hold on the top spot in the OUA West standings. Windsor, meanwhile, fell to 5-3 and dropped to third in the division with the loss.
On an efficient night overall, Joanna Jedrzejewska shone, hitting 36 per cent from the outside and leading the match with 12 kills on 25 attempts versus just three errors, while adding two aces and two blocks for a game-high 16 points. Middles Maicee Sorensen and Taylor Brisebois were similarly effective, hitting 41 and 30 per cent respectively.
Serving tough from the opening whistle, the Marauders staked themselves to an early lead in the first set, and were doubling up their opponents at the technical timeout after Lauren Mastroluisi put a cut shot to the sideline for 16-8. Despite a momentary fightback, the deficit proved too steep for the Lancers to claw back from, and a routine quick kill from Sorensen brought the set to an end by a six-point margin.
A 5-0 run to begin the second set put McMaster ahead early, and despite a return salvo from Windsor, the Marauders regained that momentum midway through the set. They led 16-10 at the technical timeout after a service error from Windsor setter Lauren Stirling, and continued to roll as the set moved toward its finish line. A hitting error from Jade Ziebarth brought up set point, before Sorensen once again provided the dagger, this time tipping the slide play to the floor.
Continuing to roll as they moved into the third set, the Marauders were well in front at the technical timeout as Brisebois teed off on a wide-open kill to take her team into the break with a 16-9 lead. A 5-1 run was capped with a dump from setter Michelle Chelladurai, and Jedrzejewska ended the night in emphatic fashion, as she unloaded on an unblocked ball in the pipe.
