Women's Soccer: Mac Enters Playoffs on a High Note, Beats Guelph 2-1

Finishing their regular season on a high note Sunday, the Marauders downed the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 at Ron Joyce Stadium.

The win was McMaster's fifth in their past six matches, and sees them eclipse the .500 mark before the onset of the playoffs. With 24 points, the Marauders finished fourth in the OUA West standings, and will host the Windsor Lancers in a divisional quarterfinal on Wednesday, October 28.

Rookie forward Steph Roberts had both Marauder goals, including the game winner in the 77th minute. Guelph's lone tally in a losing effort fell to Courtney Whiteside.

Things began brightly for McMaster, as Roberts struck for the game's opening goal in just the 10th minute, giving the hosts a lead they would carry comfortably into the halftime break. They appeared to be well on the way to a victory, before a miscommunication at the back allowed Whiteside to latch onto the ball and chip past Cristina Abbatangelo in the Marauder goal in the 75th minute.

Level pegging was short lived, however, as Roberts added her second goal of the day just two minutes later, heading past the keeper at the near post to retake the lead for McMaster.

The Marauders have little time to savour their win, returning to action in just three days, when they host the Lancers under the lights at Ron Joyce Stadium.
