Box Score Undefeated and ranked fourth in the country, the Toronto Varsity Blues showed off their credentials on Sunday to cruise past the Marauders in straight sets.
Set scores were 25-9, 25-21 and 25-19 for the Blues, who improved to 8-0 and continue to lead the competitive OUA East. McMaster, meanwhile, suffered their second-consecutive loss and fell to 5-3 on the season, good for second in the OUA West.
Caleigh Cruickshank and Charlotte Sider posted identical totals of 12 points to lead the Blues and the match on Sunday, with 12 and eight kills respectively. Joanna Jedrzejewska was McMaster's leading scorer with 11 points from 10 kills and an ace, but hit just .097 on the day.
Toronto got off to a blazing start on Sunday, and never really looked back, winning seven of the first nine points of the match to a force an early timeout from McMaster. That lead grew to 11 points at the technical timeout, when a kill from the left brought Toronto into the break with a 16-5 advantage. A Marauder serve went wide to bring up set point, and it came to an end on the very next point when Maicee Sorensen's attempted tip fell wide.
The Marauders made a strong push in the second set, and came within a point of the Blues at 16-17 with Lauren Mastroluisi enjoying an excellent run from the service line. But that was as close as McMaster would come in the set, as the Blues ultimately took it by a four-point margin.
McMaster once again made things close in the third, and were within a point of the Blues at the technical timeout. But just as they did in the second, the Blues pulled away late, winning nine of the final 13 points on Sunday to take the match 25-19 and 3-0.
The Marauders will close out the first half of their season with a home date against the Brock Badgers on Friday and a road trip to Guelph on Saturday before the onset of the winter break.
