MARAUDERS EDGED 24-22 IN GUELPH

Box Score

The McMaster football team was hoping to spoil the party at Guelph's Homecoming but the Gryphon's were able to defend home-field and defeated the Marauders 24-22 on Saturday afternoon. The win for Guelph was the first over McMaster in conference play since a 22-20 decision in 2005.

Played in a steady and sometimes heavy rain, both teams had some problems with the elements and points were at a premium.

The first quarter ended with the teams tied 3-3 after exchanging field goals. Tyler Crapigna gave McMaster a 6-3 lead in the second quarter before Guelph got a touchdown from Alex Charette to grab a 10-6 advantage. Before halftime, McMaster got a touchdown from sensational rookie Danny Vandervoort and the Marauders were ahead 13-10 at the break.

Guelph took advantage of some turnovers in the third quarter, intercepting McMaster twice and scoring on both opportunities to grab a 24-13 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The Marauders got a 43-yard Crapigna field goal to get closer at 24-16, and with under a minute left Maroon quarterback Marshall Ferguson directed McMaster into the Guelph zone, capped with a touchdown toss to Tyler Loveday with 17 seconds remaining. The Marauders needed to score a two-point conversion to force overtime but the toss for two was knocked down and Guelph had the big win.

The Marauders now enter their bye-week and will not be in action again until hosting the McMaster Homecoming game on October 5th versus Waterloo.

Homecoming tickets are now on sale.
