The McMaster wrestling team got back on the mat for the first time in 2013, to compete at the Brock Invitational Meet and had some promising results.

Both the Mac men’s and women’s teams finished fourth in the overall team standings at Brock, but some of the individual results were very encouraging as the team looks to peak at the OUA Championships in mid-February.

Last season’s CIS rookie of the year Jason Buckle (Hamilton, ON) has been fighting an injury all season, but made a statement he is regaining his form as he took the Gold medal in the 61-KG weight class at Brock.  Buckle’s teammate, freshman Ahmed Shamiya (Burlington, ON) captured bronze at 61 kilos, giving McMaster two spots on the podium.

Other medal winning efforts came from Andrew Sinclair (Hagersville, ON), who was third in the 54-KG class, while two McMaster women also brought home some hardware.

At 55-KG, fourth-year wrestler Erica D’Angelo (Maple, ON) won the silver medal, losing in the final to the defending CIS Champion from Brock.  McMaster Coach Nick Cipriano called D’Angelo’s performance “an absolutely fabulous result.”

Also making the medal podium in the 51-KG weight class was Nicole Mazara (Haliburton, ON).

In addition to the medals, the Marauders saw six other wrestlers finish in the top-six in their respective weight categories, showing good team depth across the roster.
