Box Score Hamilton, Ont. - On Sunday afternoon, the Marauders hosted the Ottawa Gee-Gees in Burridge Gymnasium. The visitors would sweep the home team with set scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-23.
In the first set, the Marauders would find themsleves down 8-4, forcing head coach Tim Louks to call an early timeout. McMaster would make up some points, with a tough serve coming from Kailee Stock (Newmarket, Ont.) and some Ottawa errors. The Gee-Gees would call a timeout while they were up 11-8, and would head into the technical timeout up 16-12.
With a kill from Shannon McRobert (Whitby, Ont.) and a dump from an over pass, McMaster would get within two. It wouldn't last long though as Ottawa would go on a run, giving them a five point lead at 19-14. A Marauder timeout would get the girls back on track as some great defensive plays would get them within one at 19-18.
Unfortunately, the Gee-Gees would find a way to win with a killer back row attack from Karina Krueger-Schwanke (Blumenau, Brazil) and a block from Kathryn Weihrer would end the set as Ottawa went on to win it 25-19. The Gee-Gees would tally 11 kills to the Marauders eight in the first set.
In the second set, some tough serves early on from Gee-Gee Kelsie English (Orleans, Ont.) would for McMaster to call a timeout at 9-6. After the timeout it would get worse as they were unable to side out. They would find themselves down 12-6, but a kill from Stock would get them the ball back at 12-7. But then, Ottawa would get fou quick points and head into the technical timeout up 16-7 with a kill from Myriam English (Orleans, Ont.).
Poor serve receive and some strong offense from Ottawa proved to be McMaster's downfall in the second as they were defeated 25-13 with a kill percentage of just 4%.
Two aces from Amanda Weldon (Hamilton, Ont.) would get the Marauders started, but a kill from K. English would stop the run. McMaster would find themselves down 5-3, but would get the ball back. Patricia Raso (Hamilton, Ont.) would then go on to help the Marauders go up 7-5 with some tough serving.
Tied up at 10 with some great defense on both sides of the court, middle Camilla Thorne-Tjomsland (Winnipeg, Man.) would be a force at the net as well at the service line. Her efforts allowed the Marauders to gain the lead and would head into the technical timeout up by four. McMaster would continue to use the momentum to win two more points before Ottawa was able to side out.
Gee-Gees setter Christina Grail (London, Ont.) would get Ottawa back within three, forcing McMaster to call a timeout at 18-15. Later, Ottawa would tie if at 18 with a block from K. English and a miscommunication between McRobert and Weldon would give the Gee-Gees the go ahead point at 19-18.
Despite keeping the score close, Krueger-Schwanke would come up with a huge kill from the right side and would follow that with a couple of aces. McMaster would try to fight their way back, but the Gee-Gees would ultimately prevail 25-23.
Ottawa's player of the game was Krueger-Scwanke who totalled a game-high 10 kills and three aces. K. English and M. English would both record 9.5 points each and Grail would tally 25 assists in the win for the Gee-Gees.
For McMaster, McRobert earned the Big Mac Player of the Game honours for her 10 points on seven kills and three blocks. Libero Meagan Nederveen (Dundas, Ont.) would have a game-high 10 digs.
The Marauders travel to Thunder Bay, Ont. to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a double header on Friday and Saturday, with both games at 7pm.
