MARAUDERS TAKE DOWN LANCERS IN FIVE FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Hamilton, Ont. - The McMaster women's volleyball team opened up the 2011 regular season with a win over the Windsor Lancers at Burridge Gymnasium on Friday night.

The two teams battled the majority of the first set for the all important first set win, but Windsor would get it, beating the Marauders 25-20. Despite killing 15 balls to Windsor's eight, serving and attack errors would put the Marauders behind one game to none.

In the second set, the Lancers would win again by the same score, putting McMaster in a tough position to get back in the best of three match. McMaster had seven errors in the set with only ten kills compared to Windsor's 12 kills and two errors.

In the third set, McMaster came alive, earning the win 25-22. The Marauders kill percentage was a .152, the best of all sets played for McMaster.

Another close set would have fans on the edges of their sets, but McMaster would force the fifth set with a 25-23 win.

In the fifth set, the Marauders took a large lead of 7-2, thanks to strong serving from rookie Lauren Mastroluisi (Ancaster, Ont.). The Lancers fought back at the switch though, tying up the score 13-13. The Marauders would pull off the win though, coming back from a two set deficit to win their first match of the OUA season.

Mastroluisi had 14 kills in the match with an ace and 18 digs. Shannon McRobert (Whitby, Ont.) also had double digit numbers in kills with 11 and earned five aces for McMaster. Setter Amanda Weldon (Hamilton, Ont.) had 39 assists in the win and libero Meagan Nederveen (Dundas, Ont.) had a game-high 24 digs.

For the Lancers, Kaila Seguin (Windsor, Ont.) had 18 kills and 17 digs and teammate Ana Vrcelj (Windsor, Ont.) had 12 kills. Hannah Robson (Windsor, Ont.) had 23 kills for Windsor.

The Marauders host the Western Mustangs in a rematch of last year's OUA quarterfinal tomorrow night at Burridge Gymnasium.
