Jay Barlett joined McMaster University in December 2019.
Barlett leads the strategic planning and development of communications and marketing materials for McMaster University's Department of Athletics & Recreation. In his role, he oversees the creation and distribution of content across multiple digital and print platforms, ensuring consistent and engaging messaging that enhances the department's brand and outreach efforts. He manages the department's official websites and social media content, crafting compelling narratives for team achievements, events, and individual athlete stories, while producing high-quality graphics, videos, and promotional materials.
Barlett collaborates with various stakeholders, including student groups, coaches, student-athletes, alumni, and administrative staff, to align communications strategies with the department's goals. He plays a crucial role in donor engagement, utilizing targeted email and social media campaigns to foster relationships and support fundraising initiatives such as the Giving Tuesday campaign. Additionally, Barlett coordinates media relations, acting as the primary point of contact for press inquiries, facilitating interviews, organizing press conferences, and managing game-day media operations.
Barlett's journey in collegiate athletics began at Northwestern Oklahoma State University Athletics, where he served as the Marketing and Communications Coordinator and Assistant Sports Information Director. A native of Burlington, Ontario, Barlett found his calling in athletics during his five-year playing career with the Rangers baseball program. An alumnus of Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Barlett earned a bachelor's degree in Health and Sports Science with minors in Business Administration and Marketing, followed by a master's degree in Adult Education & Athletic Administration with honours.
His path includes experience at the conference level with the Great American Conference (GAC. NCAA DII) and Ontario University Athletics (OUA, U SPORTS). He has also provided media relations support for high level events such as the RBC Canadian Open, the Basketball Hall of Fame Toronto Series, and numerous conference tournaments and national championships.
Jay Barlett resides in Simcoe with his partner Olivia and their two sons.
