HAMILTON, Ont. – On Friday, the McMaster Marauders (16-6) faced the Toronto Varsity Blues (13-9) at Burridge Gymnasium and walked away with a clean 3-0 sweep, advancing to the Quigley Cup next week.
The gym was full of excited McMaster fans, and the Marauders could really feel the energy. The first set was a close back-and-forth battle with the Varsity Blues. After intense rallies and strong kills, the Marauders were able to close the gap.
Olivia Julien (Toronto, Ont.) tied the score at 16-16, and
Sullie Sundara (Kanata, Ont.) made a service ace that extended the Marauders' lead to 22-20. McMaster kept its lead and won the set 25-23.
McMaster started the second set strong, receiving the first several points. The Varsity Blues tried to catch up, but blocks from
Chayse Victoria (Oakville, Ont.), Sundara, and
Maddy Lutes (Barrie, Ont.) helped keep the Marauders ahead 19-12. A service ace from Lutes provided set point, and McMaster took the second set 25-14.
Sundara continued to keep the momentum going in the third set with a service ace, giving the Marauders a competitive edge.
Abby Delamere also contributed with a service ace that pulled McMaster ahead 6-3. Kill after kill, the Marauders were able to hold onto their lead and win the set 25-23, finishing the match 3-0.
