Women’s Curling takes silver at U SPORTS Championship

LETHBRIDGE, Alb. — After a dominant OUA Championship showing, and coming home with gold, the McMaster curling team took on the national competition at U SPORTS this past week.

The Marauders started in the round robin where they came away 4-3 and would later face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in the semi finals. The Marauders had previously faced the WolfPack in the round robin and did not come out victorious. But it was a clean slate come playoff time and the Marauders were in their best form. In the semi finals, the Marauders took the lead after the 2nd end. The WolfPack tied it back up in the 3rd, but the Marauders would score a big two points in the 5th end to jump ahead by two. The last few ends would be tight but the Marauders maintained their lead to beat the WolfPack 5-4 and punch a ticket to the U SPORTS final.

McMaster would face the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks in the final. This final would be a rematch of the OUA Championship final, where the Marauders took it 5-3. The OUA final rematch would be a close battle. Laurier got on the board first in the 2nd end but the Marauders tied it up in the 3rd at two a piece. Laurier would then put single points on the board in both the 4th and 5th ends, forcing the Marauders to play catch up late in the game. The Marauders came up with a big two points in the 6th to tie it up. After a scoreless 7th end, it would stay tied heading into the final end. It would be Laurier that would come up with the difference maker in the final end, and the Golden Hawks would take the gold with a score of 5-4. The Marauders would come away with the silver medal after a hard fought game. Congratulations to the team of Clara Dissanayake (Sudbury, Ont.), Maggie Fitzgerald (Halifax, N.S.), Evelyn Robert (Clarksburg, Ont.), Rachel Steele (Port Perry, Ont.) and Sydney Taylor (Waterdown, Ont.) on their U SPORTS medal.
