McMaster earns four points in doubleheader against Western

The McMaster Marauders (4-1-1) earn a draw and a win in their doubleheader against the Western Mustangs (3-1-2) on Friday and Sunday this past weekend.

The maroon took on the Mustangs at Ron Joyce Stadium during Pride Night. The Birds recorded eight shots on target in an offensive battle that ended 3-3.

In the 13th minute, the Mustangs got on the board after a rebound was deposited past goaltender, Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.).

The maroon bounced right back, scoring just two minutes later. A header from defender, Baryal Khan (Hamilton, Ont.), beat the Mustangs netminder. Khan's tally is his first as a Marauder. Forward, Amir Shirazi (Oakville, Ont.), recorded the assist.

The early scoring spree continued as the Mustangs capitalized on a well-played corner kick, taking a 2-1 lead. Then, late in the first half, the maroon's relentless attack awarded them a penalty shot. Shirazi stepped up to the spot and took a perfectly placed strike to equalize the match.

At half-time, the action-pact game remained tied at two. The maroon brought a very strong offensive attack, recording six shots on goal. The Marauders were led by Shirazi, who recorded a goal and assist. Shizari added to his scorching hot start, as he scored his seventh goal of the year.

Once the play resumed, the game went back-and-forth with neither team grabbing control. It wasn't until the 67th minute when midfielder, Domenico Folino (Oakville, Ont.), broke the deadlock with a clutch play assisted by Shizari, his second of the game.

The maroon's defence played well defending the lead, getting in the way of multiple shot attempts but unfortunately the Mustangs tied the game late with a penalty shot and the final score stood at three each.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Marauders earned a solid 2-0 win. Forward, Jacob Patten (Hamilton, Ont). opened the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 45th minute for the Marauders, securing the lead right before half-time.

Through the half, both teams had few opportunities. McMaster registered two shots on net and Cagalj recorded two saves.  In the 66th minute, first-year forward, Wesley Alcantara (Hamilton, Ont.), extended the Marauders lead with his first goal of the season.

McMaster played a much better defensive game as the Mustangs were only able to generate one shot on goal in the second half and three in total.

Up next, the maroon take on Laurier (3-1-1) at University Stadium on September 20th.
