Marauders close out season in Kingston

In the matinee game, the McMaster Marauders men's basketball had a showdown with the Queens Gaels for the OUA Quarterfinals.

Mike Demagus led the Marauders with 20 points and six rebounds against the Gaels. Tyler Garcia served 14 points, and he also handed out five assists. AY Osunde played stronly on both sides of the court, while knocking down 14 points, including 4 clutch threes.

The Gaels opened up a sizeable lead early, shooting 53.3 percent from the field in the first quarter, to go up 24-14 after the first 10 minutes. The Gaels heated up in the second, but the Marauders did too. Two minutes into the second, the Marauders had already picked up two fouls, which made seven of the eight fouls called Marauder fouls. In the face of the contentious first two quarters, the visiting Marauders bit back and pulled within six after the consecutive trio of a Demagus three, Garcia jumper, and Charles layup. By the end of the quarter, both teams matched scoring with 20 points to walk into the half 44-34.

Nathan Charles was playing everywhere. While many of his teammates were finding themselves flustered with the hearty number of calls, he remained composed and held the group standing, which played instrumental for his squad walking into the next half.

The Marauders came back re-inspired in the second half. The Gaels lost some steam and McMaster found it, pushing a 50 percent shooting from field range, and 42.9 percent from the arch. Queens maintained their lead off fastbreak points, but the Marauders played the glass well with 25 rebounds.

Flustering the Gaels, the Marauders pushed further and outscored the Gaels 26-22 in the third quarter, while keeping their lead under 10, and under five for the majority. AY Osunde dropped a deep three to bring the game to a one point difference with three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Early sharp shooting in the 4th let the Gaels find a 10 point lead once again, but a 6 point run for the Marauders brought it back down. With a minute and a half, Garcia missed a free-throw clearing the way for a reset and offensive rebound from Charles. Charles found Osunde, who put the Gaels in the three point splash zone. All of a sudden, the Gaels eight point lead, was five. The Queen's men, ran it fast, but with a missed layup, Daniel Graham does what he does and dropped yet another three pointer.

Down by as many as 12, the Marauders fought hard up until the final moments of the match. Going out with sweat, it was the Queens Gaels that reigned victorious 85-79.

With much to be proud of, the game concludes the men's hard earned season. McMaster Men's Basketball will be back next fall.
