Marauders fall in back-to-back games over the weekend

Ottawa, Ont. — The McMaster Marauders (1-9-0) took on the Ottawa Gee-Gees (7-2-0) and Carleton Ravens (9-0-0) over the weekend. The Marauders fell in both games of their Ottawa series.

Game one vs Ottawa (11-22-24)

The Marauders and Gee-Gees played in a very competitive first quarter. Cashius McNeilly (Scarborough, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Marauders with an early three. McNeilly cashed in his second three, a minute later. Daniel Graham (Hamilton, Ont.) connected on a jumper. Standout guard, Anthony Warzeszcz (Mississauga, Ont.), added five points as the Marauders trailed by three. Tyler Garcia (Mississauga, Ont.) would tie it with his first three-pointer of the game. McNeilly scored late in the quarter and the Marauders were down by two at the end of the first quarter.

Moody Qasim (Mississauga, Ont.) drilled a three to open the scoring for the Marauders in quarter two. Elijah Bethune (Toronto, Ont.) ended an 8-2 run for Ottawa. Second-year guard, Jeremiah Francis (Surrey, B.C), knocked down a jumper for his first points of the night. The Gee-Gees ended the half on an 8-2 run and led by 11 at half-time.

Brendan Amoyaw (Winnipeg, Man.) hit a jumper and two free throws to get the Marauders going in the third quarter. Graham connected on a triple. Ares Culley-Bremner (Hannon, Ont.) hit two mid-range jumpers midway through the quarter. Graham added three-pointer and the Marauders trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter.

Qasim connected on two early jumpers and the Marauders trailed by seven early in the fourth quarter. McNeilly connected on his third three of the night. Warzeszcz ended a 12-0 Gee-Gees run with a three. Warzeszcz was successful on another jumper. Warzeszcz and Qasim both drilled two big shots in the dying moments which brought the Marauders within seven but that is how the game would end. The Marauders would fall 77-70 as they switched their attention to the Carleton Ravens.

Game two vs Carleton (11-23-24)

The Marauders looked for a bounce back effort as they took on the undefeated Ravens. Anthony Warzeszcz (Mississauga, Ont.) scored on the Marauders first possession of the game. Tyler Garcia (Mississauga, Ont.) connected on a three and then followed it up with a layup finish. Warzeszcz drilled a three-point attempt, and the Marauders were up by three. Elijah Bethune (Toronto, Ont.) scored after a 13-4 Ravens run. McNeilly hit three free throws to end the quarter. The Marauders were down by six entering the second quarter.

Moody Qasim (Mississauga, Ont.) and Bethune opened the scoring for the Marauders. Warzeszcz scored on a pretty layup finish. Riaz Saliu (Oshawa, Ont.) scored his first points of the night. Warzeszcz hit a three and brought the Marauders to within three of the Ravens. Tyler Garcia (Mississauga, Ont.) nailed both free throws and connected on a layup to give the Marauders the lead. Garcia continued his strong quarter with a triple and the Marauder held a three-point lead at half-time.

Warzeszcz opened the third quarter with a triple. Garcia kept the Marauders out front with another three-pointer. McNielly ended a 10-0 Ravens run with two successful free throws. McNeilly ended another Ravens run with a three-pointer and the Marauders ended the quarter trailing by 10.

Brendan Amoyaw (Winnipeg, Man.) made a strong move to the basket for the layup score as the Marauders trailed by nine early in the fourth quarter. Scores from Qasim and Warzeszcz kept the Marauders within reach. Made free throws by McNeilly and Bethune cut into the Ravens lead, but the Marauders were unable to find their groove late and the Ravens pulled away with a 89-79 win. The Marauders went 0-2 in their Ottawa series over the weekend.

Next up, McMaster heads home to take on the Queen's Gaels on Saturday.
