Marauders winless over weekend series

HAMILTON, Ont. — The Nationally Ranked #6 McMaster Marauders (7-2-2) went winless in both matches against the Guelph Gryphons (4-3-3) over the weekend.

Match One vs Guelph

The first match of the weekend was on Friday, and it was senior night at Ron Joyce Stadium. The Marauders dominated the early going, Amir Shirazi (Oakville, Ont.) and Jacobo Cordon Cruz (Oakville, Ont.) both had great chances to take the lead with no success, however, in the 16th minute, Cordon Cruz finishes off a
beautiful pass from Domenico Folino (Oakville, Ont.) to take the lead.

In the 29th minute, the Marauders' goalie, Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.), makes the biggest of his three saves in the half. The Marauders brought great offensive pressure, but would not extend the lead going into half. Once play returned, the game slowed down a bit as both teams took a defensive approach. Through the 65th minute, only one shot on net was recorded between the two teams.

In the 76th minute, Cagalj made s a save preserving the 1-0 lead. The Marauders nearly extend their lead as Matthew Paiva (Georgetown, Ont.) drilled one off the crossbar. Cagalj made a few big stops to keep Guelph off the board late, but Guelph would score in extra time to tie the game. The game would end in a 1-1 draw.

Match Two vs Guelph

The Marauders rematched the Gryphons on Sunday, looking to one-up their draw on Friday. Guelph would have the momentum in the early going, scoring on their first shot on target in the 15th minute. Guelph would have another early opportunity that was saved by Cagalj.

The maroon would respond with a goal from Shirazi, his tenth of the season, evening the game at one. Second-year Marauder, Mohamed Alshakman (Hamilton, Ont.), recorded his seventh assist of the season on the play. The play slowed down for most of the half until the Gryphons would add a late goal in extra time to take the lead at half.

When the game resumed, the Marauders took over the momentum with Jacob Patten (Hamilton, Ont.) burying a goal just two minutes into the second half. The tie would not last very long as the Gryphons would score in the 56th minute, restoring the lead. Just three minutes later, Guelph would add some insurance with another goal. The Marauders were unable to get these goals back and would fall 4-2 to the Guelph Gryphons.

Next up, the Marauders will close out their regular season against the Waterloo Warriors (3-6-2) in Waterloo on Saturday, Oct 12th at 3:15pm.
