HAMILTON, Ont. — After finishing their regular season with a win over Waterloo, the McMaster Marauders (8-2-2) hosted the Western Mustangs (7-2-4) in the OUA quarterfinals.
McMaster held on to win the quarterfinal game 2-1.
McMaster finished second in the OUA west division this season with a total of 26 points. This granted the Marauders a bye in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
Amir Shirazi (Oakville, Ont.) contributed heavily to McMaster's success this season, recording 17 points which ties him as the leader in the OUA this season.
McMaster kept the ball in Western's half early in the game and won the first corner. The Mustangs added pressure as well, coming close to scoring the opening goal with a shot that hit off the post. Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) had to be sharp midway through the first half with Western's added pressure around the net.
McMaster would strike first in the 37th minute as Shirazi would beat the keeper to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead.
With less than five minutes into the second half, Sachin Sergeant (Lynden, Ont.) found some space in the box and was able to sneak it past the keeper and give McMaster an insurance goal. More chances would come for McMaster in the 60th minute with a shot by Domenico Folino (Oakville, Ont.), challenging the Western keeper to make a save.
After an earlier chance was called offside, Western capitalized on a second opportunity to get back within one. Pressure from Western continued into extra time, as they came close to tying it up, but would hit the crossbar.
McMaster would hold on to win the quarterfinal game 2-1 and will move on to the OUA semifinals.
