SUDBURY, Ont. - The Marauders won 73-65 against the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury on Saturday night. They picked up two wins on the road this weekend, and will hope to continue that streak as they continue to travel next weekend.
As a team, McMaster made 10 of 22 attempted threes, earning a 45.5% scoring percentage compared to Laurentian's 19.2%. Jenna Button led McMaster with 10 free throws, one three-pointer, and four two-point field goals for 21 points in the game. Amy Stinson had a great night with four three-pointers, two field goals, and 13 rebounds. First year Emily Frankovic and Delanet Bourget both made two threes in the game, displaying the team's depth. Â
Veteran Stinson opened the game with a three pointer, followed shortly after by first year Frankovic with a smooth three to give McMaster an early five-point lead. McMaster was strong in the first quarter, and with less than two minutes left in the first quarter, Sophia Urosevic made a three, exciting the away bench. Following that, Urosevic made a huge block, stopping the Voyageurs from generating much offense at the end of the quarter. Hoping to close the point differential, Laurentian made an impressive jump shot as the buzzer sounded, with McMaster holding a 21-15 lead.Â
Both teams struggled on their shots early in the second quarter, but Laurentian was able to put up four points to close McMaster's lead to two points. It seemed like the Voyageurs may take over the lead, but Stinson and Bourget each sunk threes to help hold McMaster's lead. Halfway through, Stinson sunk another three, shutting down any momentum the Voyageurs may have had. The Marauders outscored the Voyageurs twenty to eight in the second quarter and went into the break with a comfortable 18-point lead, 41-23. Â
The third quarter had a slow start, but Button was able to open the score with a layup. Laurentian found some momentum, trying to catch McMaster on the scoreboard. Button put up her first three of the game, followed by Stinson's fourth three to finish off the quarter 59-48 for McMaster.Â
The Voyageurs managed to get within four of McMaster late in the fourth quarter, putting the pressure on the away team. Button made a jump shot, followed by a big three from Bourget, helping to cushion the Marauder lead, 64-55. Laurentian called a timeout with 3:54 left in the game, trying to pull out all the stops to overturn McMaster. The Voyageurs showed grit, drawing four fouls out of McMaster in the last few minutes of the game. Button made two free throws with eight seconds left, causing a Voyageur timeout to see if they could find seven more points in the game. McMaster ultimately won the game 72-65, after a dominant first half but competitive second half.Â
