HAMILTON, Ont. - The men's soccer team's four-game win streak was brought to a halt today after their home game loss to the York Lions. The loss pushes the Marauders down to second place in the OUA West rankings as the Lions now lead.
York came out aggressive to start the game, showing off some impressive offensive sequences. McMaster responded with pressure of their own. It was a very rough first half with eight fouls.
Sachin Sargeant had the crowd hyped up after an impressive nutmeg on the right wing leading to a missed chance for the Marauders. York scored the first goal from a free kick in the 41st minute that sent midfielder
Justin Wood off with a red card. Goalie
Ethan Cagalj was able to save the free kick shot with a diving effort but couldn't hold on to the ball, with the Lions scoring off of the rebound.
The Marauders tried to up the intensity in the second half. As they were playing from behind and down a man, they needed to take some risks. This led to some promising attacks but also a few intimidating counterattacks from the Lions. As both teams were closely matched and constantly fighting to gain the upper hand, tensions grew high. York received four yellow cards in the second half. After a couple of emotional altercations, the game ended with Mac unable to find a goal.
McMaster will get a chance at revenge this Sunday when they take on York in Toronto. It is sure to be an intense, feisty game. Hopefully they can bounce back to the top of the standings as they draw closer to the end of the season.
