WATERLOO, Ont. - The men's soccer team fought a close match against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks today, scraping by with a late goal to take the lead.
From the start of the game, the Golden Hawks attacked with confidence. They managed five shots in the first half but the resilient Marauders defence held them off, with keeper Ethan Cagalj recording an impressive three saves.
The second half saw the Marauders bring up the tempo and start being more active. Their efforts led to six shots, but the Laurier defence was able to withstand the pressure.
It wasn't until the 75th minute that someone broke through. Sachin Sargeant, assisted by Damiano Refosco, took the lead for McMaster and recorded his first goal of the season. The inspiring goal helped the Marauders to stay focused and lock down on defence, preventing Laurier from scoring for the rest of the game.
Ethan Cagalj gave an impressive effort as well as forward Amir Shirazi, who led the game in shots-on-goal. The team is now on a three-game winning streak and looks to lengthen it this Sunday in Hamilton, where they'll face off Laurier again.
