SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont - The men's soccer team came out on top today in a nail-biting victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds.
The Marauders showed their resiliency as they came back from behind twice in the game to ultimately take the lead. Intense pressing caused many defensive mistakes on both sides, which McMaster capitalised on through quick, decisive goals.
From the start, both teams showed their dangerous strength on offense. Lots of high presses led to defensive lapses, and eventually the Marauders gave up a penalty in the 32nd minute. Algoma opened up the scoring off of the penalty. However, McMaster responded quickly with a goal in the 41st minute, finally breaking through the pressure. A through ball from the left wing led to a slick, one-touch shot from Cristian Alfieri.
Coming out of the half, the Thunderbirds brought on the pressure again, gaining back the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute. Playing from behind once more, McMaster responded with urgency and tried to break through, making plenty of runs up the right wing. They succeeded in the 75th minute when a cross from a corner flew over everyone's head and landed at the feet of Joseph Guindy, who tied the game with a well-placed shot. Feeling inspired, the Marauders kept up the momentum and finally took the lead three minutes later. Amir Shirazi, who now has three goals this season, buried the ball in off of a great cross from the left wing. Algoma tried to retaliate, but the Marauders held them back and bagged the win, with Amir Shirazi winning player of the match for his winning goal.
In a game that went back and forth from the very beginning, this exciting win showed the resiliency of the men's team and should motivate them as they move on to another away game next week in Waterloo.
