In a celebration of athletic excellence and a nod to McMaster University's storied sports history, the institution has unveiled seven inductees and one team as the McMaster Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023.

An induction ceremony is set to take place October 13. This annual event, eagerly awaited by Marauder faithful, is a celebration which spotlights exceptional athletes, coaches, and contributors whose unwavering commitment and remarkable contributions have etched an enduring legacy in the annals of McMaster's sporting heritage.
"These exceptional individuals have left an enduring legacy on our sports programs and have set the bar high for future generations of Marauders" says Shawn Burt, Director of Athletics & Recreation at McMaster. "We are proud to honour their remarkable achievements and celebrate their contributions to our university's storied sports history."
The 11 student-athletes selected exemplified a rich tapestry of talent, perseverance and passion while representing the university in a diverse array of sports and disciplines.
Nick Cipriano (Wrestling Coach) In a coaching career spanning 37 years, Nick Cipriano has been a pillar of the McMaster Wrestling Program. His remarkable achievements include five-time OUA Coach of the Year awards for the Men's Program, four-time CIS Coach of the Year honors for the Men, and one OUA Coach of the Year recognition for the Women's Program. Cipriano's coaching prowess led the Men's Program to five OUA Championships and two CIS Championships. Additionally, he represented Canada at various international events, including three Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.
Dr. Janice Harvey (Builder)
Dr. Janice Harvey has been an instrumental figure in the development and growth of McMaster University's sports programs. An accomplished sport medicine physician who completed her medical training at McMaster University, Dr. Harvey selflessly served McMaster students and varsity athletes for over three decades. She is a pioneer in the field at McMaster, as she was the first primary care physician specializing in sports medicine to work in a full-time capacity on campus, seeing athletes both at the Student Wellness Centre and the Sports Injury Clinic since its infancy. Dr. Harvey's visionary leadership and support have been invaluable in nurturing young talents and fostering a culture of excellence in McMaster Athletics.
Peter Hrkal (Men's Volleyball, '09)
Peter Hrkal's legacy on the McMaster volleyball court is nothing short of extraordinary. He was a pivotal member of the Men's Volleyball team during his four-year tenure. Hrkal boasts numerous accolades, including back-to-back OUA Championships (08-09), OUA Rookie of the Year, and multiple All-Star selections. His leadership and performance significantly contributed to the program's success.
Brooke Millman (Women's Water Polo, '01)
Brooke Millman made waves in the pool as a McMaster student-athlete. Her contributions to the Women's Water Polo team led them to an OUA Gold Medal in 2001, earning an MVP nod along the way. Millman's exceptional skills and leadership helped secure her place as a four-time OUA All-Star and a four-time OUA Championship Tournament All-Star. She played a pivotal role in the team's impressive 50+ regular-season win streak.
Nicole Nerling (Women's Rugby, '04)
Nicole Nerling left an indelible mark during her time as a McMaster athlete. She earned the Team MVP title in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, showcasing her exceptional rugby skills. Nerling was a three-time OUA First-Team All-Star and a two-time Athlete of the Week. Her outstanding contributions to Women's Rugby at McMaster have earned her a place in the Hall of Fame.
Sarah (Sterling) Reed (Women's Basketball, '04)
Sarah Reed was an integral part of the Women's Basketball team's success at McMaster. She was a key player on the OUA Gold Medal-winning team in the 2002-03 season and received multiple accolades, including OUA West Player of the Year. Reed's leadership and scoring ability set her apart as a Second Team All-Canadian and a team Co-Captain.
Keegan Selby (Men's Rugby, '10)
Keegan Selby established himself as a dominant force in McMaster Rugby. He was part of the OUA Gold Medal-winning team in the 2008-09 season and earned several awards, including two OUA MVP titles. Selby also gained international experience, representing Canada in various rugby championships.
Brian Stewart (Cross Country/Track, '99 & '02)
Brian Stewart excelled as both a Cross Country and Track and Field athlete during his time at McMaster. His achievements include being part of the OUA Silver Medal-winning team and earning the Cross Country MVP title. Stewart's dedication to his sports led to recognition as a Cross-Country Second Team All-Canadian.
Men's 4x800m Championship Team ('84)
The 1984 Men's 4x800m Relay Team, consisting of Mark Allison ('86), John Willett ('84), Paul Kelly ('86), and George Kepenyes, achieved remarkable success by becoming the 1984 OUA Indoor Track Champions and clinched the CIS Gold Medal in Indoor Track, setting a record that still stands today at 7:36.60.
The induction ceremony for the McMaster Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023 is set to take place Friday, October 13, 2023, at 7:00 PM, with a reception to follow. The event will be held at the L.R. Wilson Hall and Waller Family Lobby at McMaster University.
