PREVIEW: Badminton ready to rally at OUA Championship

HAMILTON, Ont. - The McMaster badminton team will hit the road to Toronto this weekend for the 2023 OUA Championship as the maroon and grey looks to improve on last year's outing. The Marauders finished in sixth spot last year and will maintain this ranking headed into the provincial championship.

Nine varsity badminton programs from across Ontario will battle it out for the title - the Carleton Ravens, Guelph Gryphons, McMaster Marauders, Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Toronto Varsity Blues, TMU Bold, Waterloo Warriors, Western Mustangs and York Lions. The Varsity Blues have been on a title run since 2016 and enter this weekend as the six-time reigning OUA Champions on the court.

An Edmonton, Alta. local, Liz Evans will sport the maroon and grey for the third time at the OUA finale. The electrical and biomedical engineering student brings a wealth of badminton experience to the squad, having not only competed at the Canada Junior International and Western Canadian Team Championships, but was also a two-time member of the Pan Am squad. On the men's side, Jared So, a kinesiology student, will also compete at his third OUA Championship this weekend. The Markham, Ont. local brought ample experience on the court before joining the Marauders, including a bronze medal performance while representing Ontario at the Junior Canadian National Championships in 2017, and is now contributing to the team beyond the court as well as their student field therapist.

For the first time in nine years, the Marauders finished outside of the top five at the OUA Championship a year ago. This year, the maroon and grey will look to find their rhythm and improve on last year's finish. With a dual head coach and student-athlete in Sommer Chou, McMaster will also look to assistant coach and program-staple Jacky Ng, as well as their overall team cohesion to help buoy them back into the top five in 2023.

The maroon and grey will open the weekend with matches against the TMU Bold and Waterloo Warriors on Friday before facing the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and York Lions on Saturday.
