Still gleaming from the last victory against the blues, the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team ran away from Toronto Varsity Blues, 67-46.
Rookie, Emily Frankovic made a name for herself in her Burridge debut with eight points, 12 rebounds and five assists. 3 other teammates to make large remarks on the stat sheet include: Jenna Button with 15 points to lead both teams, along with both Amy Stinson and Cassie Joli-Couer hitting 11 points.
The Blues opened the first with three back-to-back three-pointers, while McMasters' Joli-Couer landed the team's first seven points. The Marauders picked up the lead for good just six minutes into the game.
The ladies in Maroon went on a scoring spree in the first, putting up 21 to Toronto's 15. Starter, Deanna Matasej saw 5 steals by the end of the first half, and helped the Marauders to overtake the Blues 33-27.
If there is one thing that can be said about the third and fourth quarters, it would be synergy. From steals to breakaways, the team played as a unit and dominated on all accounts. The Marauders also kept the crowd extremely engaged. With 4:15 remaining in the third, Teja McCormick swiped the ball from Toronto and sent it down the court to Jenna Button, who created a textbook give and go to Emily Frankovic - the crowd shook the stands as the squad was up 49-34. Cashing in on Toronto's fouls in the third, McMaster went four for six from the line, with two being bucket and ones. Once again in the fourth, McMaster outscored Toronto, to bring home the game 67-48.
The home opener crowd was a huge advantage for the Marauders energy and win.
