HAMILTON, Ont. - In their final game of the regular season last night, the men's soccer team took home the victory against the Western Mustangs. The Marauders now enter the playoffs with a good standing, holding a record of 7-4-1.
The Marauders started the game with a burst of energy, recording both a shot and corner kick in less than two minutes. Both teams had a back-and-forth of offensive sequences but the half ended in a scoreless stalemate.
McMaster's luck turned in the 64th minute when midfielder
Sachin Sargeant scored his first goal of the season, assisted by forward
Amir Shirazi. The Marauders continued to stagger the Western defence with powerful shots – they had an impressive 11 shots by the end of the game. Eventually, McMaster broke through again, this time scoring from a penalty kick in the 87th minute taken by midfielder
Joseph Guindy. Along with the goal, he recorded three shots, despite being subbed in late in the game.
Joseph Guindy also collected his fourth goal of the season, which makes him tied for first in goals on the team, next to forward
Cristian Alfieri.
This impressive showing should give the team confidence as they move onto the first round of playoffs this Wednesday. They will face the Laurier Golden Hawks, a team they have already beaten twice this season. They look to continue that streak in their pursuit for the OUA title.
