HAMILTON, Ont. - Two goals during added time had everyone on the edge of their seats during last night's men's soccer game. As they faced off the Windsor Lancers, the Marauders showed everyone their impressive relentlessness, despite coming short of the win.
Throughout the game, the Marauders were extremely assertive on offence. They bombarded the Lancers with insightful passes, long crosses, and inward cuts from the wing, playing confidently. The first goal came in the 17th minute off of a corner kick. Midfielder
Jacobo Cordon Cruz scored an open header, after a headed pass from defender
Jameel Durhan. The Lancers grew frustrated and earned themselves seven fouls in the first half. They were able to find a goal, though, after they were awarded a penalty kick in the 26th minute.
With the game tied, both teams tried to build momentum and break through in the second half. Goalie
Ethan Cagalj made crucial plays to hold down the Marauders defense. McMaster maintained their fast pace on offense, creating many chances from crosses and long shots. However, despite this aggression, the Lancers were the ones who ended up taking the lead, off of a quick counterattack goal in added time. It seemed like the game was over, but the Marauders persisted and added to the drama by scoring a minute later. A corner from midfielder
Damiano Refosco was buried into the back of the net calmly by forward
Ed Bryan Florent. While the game ended as a tie, the excitement of the crowd after those tense final plays made it feel almost like a win.
The chemistry of the Marauders team, which has improved immensely since the start of the season, was on full display during last night's game. Their confident style of play makes them a force to be reckoned with as they approach the playoffs, which start next week. The final game of the regular season takes place this Sunday against the Western Mustangs.
