HAMILTON, Ont. - Holding the Brock Badgers to just seven points in the first quarter, the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team cruised to a 71-49 victory.
Â
Sarah Gates (Newmarket, Ont.) recorded her third straight 25+ point performance in under a week and still leads all of U SPORTS in scoring, averaging 26.1 points per game.
McMaster came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, shooting 40% from the field. The Marauders went up 13-2 early in the first quarter and extended the lead to 17 to make the score after 10 minutes 24-7 in favour of McMaster.
Scoring another 25 points in the second, the Marauders found themselves up by 30 points at the halftime break - 49-19.
Despite struggling to find the net in the third, McMaster extended the lead to 32 at the 6:22 mark of the quarter. The Marauders held a 59-33 advantage with just 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
In the final frame, Brock had their best shooting quarter of the game but thanks to three 3-pointers, the lead was too much to come back from as McMaster earned the victory.
Gates and
Jenna Button (Dundas, Ont.) were the two Marauders who recorded double digits, combining for 39 points, five assists and five rebounds.
History was made last night in St. Catharines. With the Marauders' victory, McMaster Head Coach,
Theresa Burns, picked up her 570th career win to move her to second on the all-time U SPORTS women's basketball career coaching wins list.
