HAMILTON, Ont. - For the first time this season, the McMaster Marauders women's soccer team had only a single game on the weekend schedule. This week's contest had the Marauders match-up with the Waterloo Warriors.
The Marauders drew 2-2 against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium.
In what has become a familiar sight this season, the Marauders started the game quickly and applied offensive pressure right out of the gate. However, it wasn't until the 42nd minute that McMaster was able to break through and find the back of the net.
Lindsey Barwitzki of Sarnia, Ontario, executed a perfect corner kick to the back post where teammate
Bryanna Caldwell (Tottenham, Ont.) was waiting. Caldwell made no mistake, heading the ball past the Warriors' goalkeeper for her fourth tally of the season. The home team took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The maroon and grey controlled the start of the second half and, after a red card was assessed to the Waterloo goalkeeper, doubled the lead in the 73rd minute. Rookie,
Mia Paiement (Hamilton, Ont.), scored her first goal as a Marauder while
Madison Goertz picked up the assist for her first point in a McMaster uniform. The two goal lead didn't stand for long as the Warriors responded less than five minutes later to make it a one goal game. Having some confidence, the yellow and black continued to press and were rewarded with the tying goal in the 86th minute of play. The 2-2 scoreline stood at the final whistle.
McMaster dominated from an attacking perspective, recording 16 shots, 11 of which were on target.
Megan Mamela (Brantford, Ont.) and
Joelle Chackal (Ottawa, Ont.) had a team high three shots, with a combined four on goal. Both teams earn a point from the contest.
The Marauders move to 1-2-4 in the standings while the Warriors collect their first point of the season and sit at 0-6-1.
