The McMaster Marauders women's basketball team got back in the win column on Wednesday evening with a 78-72 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on the road.
Amy Stinson led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on the night, stuffing the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one assist. Jenna Button shot an efficient 6-of-11 from the floor, good for 18 points on the night while Cassandra Joli-Coeur poured in 13 points off the bench, shooting 6-of-9 on the night.
As a team, the Marauders were strong from the free-throw line shooting 18-20 from the charity stripe. This marks the seventh straight victory for the Marauders over the Golden Hawks dating back to November 2017.
The Marauders opened up the game with a 24-20 first quarter lead behind Stinson's 10 points in the frame – Stinson closed out the quarter with a three-point play after knocking down a difficult shot in the paint.
In the second quarter, the Marauders extended their lead going up by 12 points heading into the half off the back of an 11-3 run capped by a Deanna Mataseje three-pointer to head into the break.
Midway through the third quarter, the Marauders had their largest lead of the game when Arianne Soriano converted on a layup to push the difference to 13 points with a 53-40 lead. From there the scoring continued as the road team held out for the win as the fourth winded down.
With the win, the Marauders move up to 9-6 but their battle for fourth place in the OUA West comes to an end as the Waterloo Warriors officially locked up the spot due to a pair of forfeits from their upcoming games this week against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
With fifth place in their grasp, the squad will wrap up their regular season at home on Saturday afternoon before hitting the road in the first-round of the playoffs. Tip-off on Saturday is scheduled for 12pm.Â
