The McMaster Marauders'
Talia Ng was named as the OUA MVP, as well as an All-Star after this weekend's Championship.
Ng led her team to a sixth-place finish after falling to the Western Mustangs on the final day of play.
Â
Going 1-2 in the preliminary round on Friday, McMaster then went into Saturday's playoffs in third place in their pool.
Â
The Marauders began the playoff round with a quarter-final matchup against the Waterloo Warriors at 9am, but in a closely fought battle, Waterloo came away with a 6-4 win.
Â
Undefeated in women's singles in the tournament, Ng and
Jeslyn Chow each earned a point for McMaster before teaming up together in women's doubles and recording another. The fourth and final point added to the Marauders score was collected by women's doubles pair
Sommer Chou and Elizabeth Evans, who also remained undefeated together throughout the Championship.
Â
Though the score was close, McMaster's loss would keep them out of the semifinals. Instead, the Marauders proceeded to play the Rams in the consolation round to determine which place they would rank.
Â
McMaster took the matchup 6-3 with two singles wins for Ng and Chow, who started off the Marauders success, followed by four doubles victories.
Â
Switching it up from previous matches,
Brandon Liu and
Jared So paired up and grabbed McMaster's only men's doubles win of the matchup. Liu also worked with a new partner, Chou, to capture a mixed doubles win for their team. On the women's side, the Marauders dominated, taking both women's doubles matches, first with Evans and Ng, then with Chou and
Davina Lee.
Â
The victory against the Rams kept the Marauders alive in the hope of finishing in the top five for the ninth year in a row. McMaster met with Western to determine the fifth and sixth place finishers in tournament, but were unfortunately bested by the Mustangs 6-4.
Â
The women stood out for McMaster in the final match, earning all the points for their team. Ng and Chow both dominated their singles matches once again, Chow only letting up three points over two sets. The two women then paired up to take McMaster's first women's doubles win of the match, followed by a victory for Chou and Evans.
Â
After a tough year of trying to compete and train throughout the pandemic, the Marauders are coming away from this year's Championship with experience and lessons learned.
