The No. 2 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders men's volleyball team took down the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon in their home gym for their last regular season game, 3-1. Windsor showed up to play, winning the first set, but the Marauders won the next three, leading them to a win in four sets. The Marauders finish their regular season undefeated, and look to move forward with their winning ways into playoffs.Â
The game opened by honoring the McMaster seniors: Bennett Swan, Jordan Pereira, and Liam Irwin. Each having created their own legacy with the Marauders, they leave the team better than they found it. Â
Sam Cooper led the men in Maroon with 21.5 points in the game from 15 kills and five service aces, while Robbie Fujisawa provided big support with 42 assists. Jordan Pereira set a personal season record on the defensive side with ten digs. Mateusz Wlodarski contributed a solid 14 kills, leading him up to 17 points in the game. Navreet Sudan put up seven kills and five blocks, setting a season record with 10.5 points. Â
The Lancers came to battle, keeping the score tight for the entire set as the play continued to go back and forth. The Marauders stayed in it, showing grit and determination. The set continued past a score of 25, as the teams continued to match each other, seeking out the set point. In a rare sighting, the Marauders used both of their timeouts during the set, trying to rally the team together. Despite this, the Lancers came out on top, resulting in a score of 28-26. Â
The game continued to be a close match. Sparsely seen this season, the Mac struggled to connect with each other, seeming rattled. Both teams used up their two timeouts for the set, strategizing ways to out play each other. Tying the score all the way up to 25-25, Cooper and Tyler Pavelic put up the final two kills to push the score to 27-25. Â
The Marauders used another time out early in the third set. After their time out, Mac seemed to fall back into their groove. Cooper came in with two perfectly placed service aces, bringing the Lancers to use a timeout. Taking the first significant lead of the game, the Marauders were up 22-16. With six kills from Wlodarski and three from Max Gratton, the Marauders led to a 25-20 score.Â
The fourth set started off close, with Windsor taking a slight lead, causing the Marauders to use a time out early in the set. Suhan came in with some big blocks to defend the home court. Both Cooper and Wlodarski had two big service aces, leading the Marauders to a 22-14 lead. Cooper came in with yet another stellar service ace to claim the set point, closing out the game with a score of 25-14. Â
The Marauders now look forward to the post-season, with their perfect record. They play a quarterfinal game on Saturday, Mar. 12th at 8pm in their home gym. Finishing with a staggering 12-0 record, the maroon collectively won 36 sets while only losing 5 during the regular season, finishing first in the OUA West Division. They look forward, planning to make big waves in their post-season.Â
