Coming off of a four game win streak, the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team fell to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon 59-69 at home in Burridge Gym.
Second-year Amy Stinson came out swinging, leading all scorers putting up 21 points, and a career-high 16 rebounds, in her 28 minutes of action. Fourth-year Claire Sharkey controlled the paint, grabbing 11 rebounds, and leading all with five assists.
The game started off slow, but the Mustangs came out looking for a rematch, after the Marauders took the win 69-61 at Western University on Friday night.
The Mustangs held the lead the full first quarter. However, the Maroon held them to a 29.4 shooting percentage from the field goal range and shut out the 3-point range. Despite trailing, the home team grabbed six offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds.
The home team picked up the pace in the second quarter. With 6:49 left in the second, Mia Spadafora sent the assist to Amy Stinson for a three-pointer, and the Marauders took the lead. Stinson then knocked down seven continuous points for the squad, and the team held the lead until the end of the quarter. In the third quarter, the Mustangs stole the lead putting away 24 points.
The fourth quarter brought a tough fight for the Marauders, putting up 15 points and holding Western to 16. The effort was matched by the Mustangs, who stole the game 69-59, giving the Marauders their first loss at home this season.
The Marauders record now sits at 6-2, and the team will play next on Wednesday February 16th at the Brock Badgers.
