THUNDER BAY, Ont. - After the longest trip of the 2022 OUA season, the Marauders took to the court in Thunder Bay in hopes of securing a third straight win and the first road win of the campaign.
After battling throughout the game, the Marauders showcased their determination and edged the Lakehead Thunderwolves 68-67.
The Marauders shot 37.5% from the field and knocked down just one three-pointer in the opening frame. The host Thunderwolves held a narrow 17-16 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The second quarter looked much more like McMaster basketball. The maroon and grey were lights out from inside the arc, going 10 for 19, and an impressive 50% from three-point range. Lakehead put up 18 points but it was the Marauders who had their best scoring percentage of the day, recording 24 points before the half, to lead 40-35.
Both teams equaled each other's points in the third frame so the advantage stayed with McMaster after 30 minutes of play - 52-47.
Lakehead mounted a comeback in the final quarter, dropping a 3-pointer with just 48 seconds on the clock to make it a one point game. That's as close as the Thunderwolves would get as the Marauders escaped with a 68-67 victory.
Sarah Gates (Newmarket, Ont.) recorded McMaster's only double-double of the night with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Jenna Button (Dundas, Ont.) and
Cassie Joli-Coeur (Johnstown, Ont.) also finished the night in double-digits with 17 and 18 points, respectively.
