Gates sets McMaster record in 89-81 win over York

HAMILTON, Ont. - Sarah Gates made McMaster history in the Marauders' 89-81 win over the York Lions Friday night with a school-record 47 point performance. The Marauders led by as many as 23, but had to stave off a fourth-quarter push by the Lions to secure their first conference win of the season, improving to 1-2 in OUA play.

Gates, a fifth-year guard out of Newmarket, Ont., went 18-of-27 from the field, including seven three-pointers, surpassing the McMaster single-game points record of 43 set by Lindsay DeGroot in 2008 - and her previous career high of 38 in 2021.

Arianne Soriano chipped in 12 points and six assists while continuing to be a defensive headache for opposing offenses, as the 5'4 senior pulled down eight rebounds and came away with a game-high four steals. Jenna Button also reached double-digit scoring for the Marauders with 10 points of her own.

Looking to rebound after a tough 0-2 weekend in Ottawa, McMaster found its stride early with a 13-2 run and set the pace with a 10-point lead after the first quarter. The Marauders would trade blows with York in the second before pulling away near the end of the third quarter with a 23-point edge.

As York was looking to make its comeback bid in the fourth quarter, Gates took an already impressive night to the next level with 18 points in the final frame, knocking down seven of her last 10 shots, including four from beyond-the-arc.

The Lions were led offensively by Lauren Golding and Cyanna King, who had notable nights of their own with 31 and 24 points respectively. Although York's shooters had their chances, they failed to convert from deep as the team shot just 22 percent (7-for-31) from three-point territory.
