KAMLOOPS, B.C. - After falling to the TRU Wolfpack last night, the Marauders men's soccer team was unable to rebound and dropped a U SPORTS consolation semi-final to the UQTR Patriotes on Friday night in Kamloops.
In a game that UQTR controlled from the opening whistle, it was the Patriotes who came out on top, defeating the Marauders 5-0.
The Patriotes opened the scoring in the 31st minute, finding the back of the net from 25 yards out. UQTR went up 2-0 fifteen minutes later after Ahmad Mansour (Waterdown, Ont.) was assessed a red card and UQTR made good on the ensuing penalty kick. The Patriotes took the two goal lead into the halftime break.
Needing a big closing 45 minutes, the Marauders came into the second half strong but were down a man. The Patriotes shut them down and added a third goal in the 53rd minute before extending the lead to four in the 64th minute of play. The #8 seed recorded its fifth and final goal in the 75th minute to pick up a convincing victory and earn the right to play in one more game this season.
UQTR recorded 23 shots throughout the contest, twelve of which were on target, while holding the Marauders to just seven shots. Ethan Cagalj (Stoney Creek, Ont.) tallied seven saves throughout the contest for the Marauders.
The No. 8 seed at the U SPORTS Championship, the Patriotes will now face the TMU Bold, the No. 6 seed, on Saturday November 12th in the consolation final.
With the result on Friday, the Marauders close out the 2022 season at the U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship. McMaster will now look towards the 2023 season.
