Marauders and Lions battle to 1-1 draw

HAMILTON, Ont. - After securing a big three points in St. Catharines last weekend, the McMaster Marauders women's soccer team looked to add to their point total on Saturday against the York Lions.

Keeping their playoff hopes alive, the Marauders drew 1-1 with the visiting Lions to collect a point.

The maroon and grey had a near perfect start with Madison Goertz (Saskatoon, Sask.) scoring her first of the season in just the 2nd minute of play to give the Marauders a very early 1-0 lead. Joelle Chackal (Ottawa, Ont.) added the assist. Despite the early pressure by McMaster, both teams had shares of the attack, ensuring that the opening 45 minutes was quite the battle. The Lions edged the Marauders 13-11 in the shot category at the halftime break.

The Lions evened the scoreline just three minutes into the second half. From there, the attacking pressure slowed with the two teams combining for just 10 shots in the second half to ensure the game remained 1-1 at the final whistle.

York recorded 21 shots to McMaster's 13. Seven different Marauders recorded shots throughout the match. Alexandra Mudie (Burlington, Ont.) made 13 saves to ensure the Marauders picked up a point.

The Marauders now sit at 2-2-5 in the standings, just one point back of fifth and sixth place, while the Lions move to 5-1-3.
