The McMaster Marauders women's basketball team continued their winning ways, as they defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 63-47 at home on Saturday evening.
Sarah Gates led all players with 25 points, and dished out an additional three assists in the game. Jenna Button also put up strong stats with nine points, six rebounds and four assists for the Maroon.
Clare Sharkey was dominant on the boards, as the fifth-year center grabbing 10 rebounds on the defensive end in 22 minutes of action, while Mia Spadafora added in eight of her own - two on the offensive end - as well as a steal and six points.
Despite their strong scoring effort, the Marauders were most impressive on the defensive end. Holding their opponents to just 28.8% shooting from field goal range, the Thunderwolves struggled mightily from deep, shooting a dismal 15.4% from behind the arc on 2-of-13 attempts.
Meanwhile the Marauders held pace throughout the game, going for a healthy 34.9% from field goal range.
Jenna Button opened the scoring for the Marauders behind a pair of three-pointers. Sarah Gates added a two-pointer of her own, and the Marauders were up 8-2 two minutes into the first quarter. But Thunderwolves found their footing, and a steady back-and-forth ensued as the Marauders ended the first quarter up two points, 18-16.
The game was decided in the second quarter, as the home team began to pull away. Lakehead managed to put up six points in the second quarter, as the Thunderwolves went 0-for-4 from three-point range, and 3-of-18 from the floor. Meanwhile Gates could not be contained, dishing in 12 points of her game high 255, on 4-of-8 shooting. The Marauders entered the half up 36-22 and never looked back.
With a perfect record to start off their first weekend, the Marauders now sit at 2-0, while the Thunderwolves fall to 0-2. Looking ahead, the Marauders hit the road this Wednesday to take on the Guelph Gryphons. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
