LARGE FOURTH QUARTER SHUTS OUT ALGOMA IN TWO GAME SERIES

In the second of the two game series, the McMaster Women's basketball team shut out the Algoma Thunderbirds 83-53 on Saturday evening.

Sarah Gates of McMaster and Bethany Balaktsis of Algoma led all scorers each with 18 points respectively. However, the Marauders spread the wealth with four scorers entering double digits - Claire Sharkey and Amy Stinson both putting up 12, followed by Arianne Soriano with 11 points and three steals, rebounds, and assists, all joining Gates.

As the first quarter went underway, both teams were putting away buckets. The Marauders played strong at the boards grabbing 12 rebounds, while also pressing the Thunderbirds and keeping them at 4-17 shooting from the field goal range. In the first, the Maroon held a strong 53.3% average from field goal with the addition of a few three pointers from Gates and Mia Spadafora.

Amy Stinson hit a three and the squad took hold of the lead late in the second quarter, with 2:19 remaining, putting the team up 30-27.

In the second half, both teams held healthy shooting averages, but it was the Marauders that kept taking shots and finding the net.

A fourth quarter serge put the Marauders up to a point of no return, raking 26 points while Algoma put up 9. With the Thunderbirds missing on three straight shot attempts, it was the triple from Stinson in the last minute of regular time, followed by Jennah Taylor's layup that sent the Marauders packing with a 30 point lead.

With the result, and final score of 83-53, the Marauders improved to a 5-1 on the season and are tied with Brock University, each holding 10 points, to lead the OUA West division.

UP NEXT:  The Marauders will return to home court on January 12th 2022 to take on the Windsor Lancers at Burridge Gym. Tip off is set for 6:00PM.
